olives

after a disappointing stop at what's for dinner, which is NOT what's for dinner on saturday nights since they're closed, celia and i ended up at olives, a new restaurant on ludlow in clifton.

i was kind of bored by the meal but i have hope since they've only been open for 2 weeks. no liquor license yet so bring your own wine. celia had the orecchiette pasta with mushrooms and something or other, i forget. she liked it.

i had the southwestern chicken salad, which was fine but kind of boring and the chicken was frozen. it was not raw, it had been cooked, but just not thawed. that meant not fresh cooked so just boring.

the atmosphere was fine but nothing great. acoustics were weird... this one waiter who was talking to another table nearby was so loud we couldn't even talk. also, they sat us in the basement which seemed to be the dinner area (i think upstairs is the bar area) and it was all brick walls and carpet... so once again i felt like i was in a cave on a beautiful night. so that was not great but not their fault really either.

overall, blah. fine but nothing to write home about. i sort of felt like we could have gone to ruby tuesday's or some place like that and had the exact same meal. yawn.

the silver lining is that they serve a very comprehensive looking brunch (but no eggs benedict). however, i will forgive them for any menu omissions since they serve brunch on SATURDAY!!! yay!!! i will definitely be checking that out soon.

Oh don't go there for brunch on Saturdays. Yuck! I thought I'd give Olives one more try; they've been disappointing in the past-which is a shame. I really want them to do well. They had the standard fare for an all-you-can-eat brunch: egg casserole, breakfast meats, fruit, potatoes, buscuits & gravy. But it was all either bland (including the coffee) or dry or mushy. To be fair, I didn't order a custom-made omelet. Much as I hate to say it, blandness seems to be a trend at Olives.
