nectar

nectar is in mt. lookout square and caters mainly to the over-40 crowd. i had eaten dinner there once before, probably about a year ago, and then recently when i was scouring the depths of google for a new brunch place, i found out they do brunch too. the girls and i decided to check it out on sunday. note: there is very little to choose from on the menu if you do not eat pork.

overall, our assessment is that the food is really good (except for the croque madame... laura says don't order that). everything else is pretty much blah. take the decor for example:

blah

the service was ok, but super slow. we were the 3rd table to sit down, and by the time we got our food, about 7 tables were already eating. we had 5 people, which was more than most other tables, but still, what the hell were they doing, rewarding the small groups? literally we waited about 40 minutes from the time we ordered, and the place had maybe 20 people there total. the restaurant was not even half full.

we are hungry, dammit!

they also appeared to mess up the coffee. emma, who wanted decaf, was peeing like a mad woman after half a cup. meanwhile i had 3 cups and could barely keep my eyes open. this is not acceptable. i need my caffeine!

at 1:00, beth notified the waitress that she wanted to pay right away because she had to leave by 1:15. at 1:20 she was still waiting for her credit card back.

anyway, i just don't know what to say about this place. i would give it another shot, because the food really was that good. but i would go with only one other person (to minimize waiting time) and i would stop at lookout joe's beforehand. here are some photos of the awesome food to get you hungry...

brioche french toast with vanilla whipped cream and stewed golden raisins and pears

eggs benedict with salmon on a polenta cake

carnitas with egg, avocado, and queso fresco

i don't know why i just posted all those food pics to tempt you to go there. i really was disappointed in everything but the food. but damn those carnitas were soooooo tender and delicious...

I didn't know they did brunch - thanks for the heads-up. :)

no problem! as a vegetarian, you won't have a whole lot to choose from, but that french toast really is awesome!

I enjoyed my vegetable frittata. The food was good but service and ambiance didn't fit the "local friendly" bill. I was especially surprised when they served food to other patrons that arrived after us and we had to wait 40+ minutes for ours.

I eat at Nectar almost weekly (I love the food, love that it's organic, and it's very close to me.) I've never had the kind of experience you did, but then, I've never eaten brunch there either. Disappointing to hear your experience. My unsolicited advice? Try it again.
