i am so mad, i have been dying to go to cuba cafe which just opened a couple months ago and i read about here and here and here and here. and it is already closed! in its place is a new restaurant called caribbean cafe.
i just went for lunch with rickell and we walk into the restaurant and we are like "do you have cuban sandwiches?" and the woman was like, "no." and i said, "well we really want a cuban, where is cuba cafe?" and she goes, "this is not it." and then she made me take a menu and acted really offended that we did not want to stay. we thought we were at the wrong place but we went down the street into an office and asked them and they said cuba cafe had closed, and caribbean cafe had replaced it. and then we were so annoyed that the woman just didn't tell us that information that we went to riverside instead. and that was delicious.
rickell and i are like the biggest fans of the cuban sandwich in the entire city and so we are totally upset. if anyone has any tips on a) where we can find a truly authentic cuban and b) what the hell happened to cuba cafe, please let me know.

I read somewhere that Cuba Cafe was moving. I cannot remember where I read it, though.
I beg to differ, Hound is the biggest Cuban fan in Cincinnati. Used to live in Tampa and have craved them since.
WTF?!?!?!??! I was just there like two or three weeks ago? It's like catty-corner to where I work. No one has said anything. Oh man, I am seriously bummed. Their Cuban ROCKED!!!!

That said, the sandwich place that was previously in that same location went out of business at the end of April. Apparently the rent is high and owners of the wedding mall are unwilling to negotiate.
soozy: let us know if you remember!
hound: i don't know... i think we are all going to have to be tied for first place. :) have you tried paula's? they are not really authentic but the best i have found around here.
laura: thanks for the info. that totally sucks!
I emailed the owner and it doesn't sound like they're moving to a new location. He appreciates all the foodie fans but said the timing just wasn't right for his family.
Will miss greatly!
Wow, what a strange turn of events.
try el havanero on rt. 4 near bypass 4 in fairfield! http://www.elhavanero.net/
According to Donna Covrett (Cincinnati Magazine) the best Cuban in the city is Virgil's in Bellevue.
Methinks you need to try it Liz!
I too, went there the last week specifically for the Cuban, maybe some flan and coffee. I was totally psyched, and confused once I got there (there is still a Cuban cocktail sign near the window). Caribbean cafe opened the 17th. I tried the wrap with pork - not interesting and certainly not hot enough, one of my pet peeves. They won't last, esp. with the attitude you described.

The Virgils article is about a pastrami sandwich, not a Cuban sandwich.
