chinese imperial inn

i am on a dim sum quest lately. when i lived in new york, i ate dim sum practically every sunday at the best (and cheapest) places in chinatown and flushing. cart after cart of glistening dumplings and wobbly buns and wiggly jellyfish rolled by and you could eat to your heart's content for like $10. it was awesome.

here in cincinnati good dim sum is hard to find. i have tried grand oriental, king wok, and casual wok and found them all acceptable but nothing amazing, and also more expensive than i would like. today i went out to chinese imperial inn in sharonville with some friends and we tried our luck there.

here is a crappy cell phone pic of just a portion of our feast

the dim sum was good. not awesome but good. no carts so if that is what you need for a satisfying dim sum experience, you might be a little disappointed. however, it was better than a lot of other local dim sum and the best part was that it was cheap as hell. there were six of us and we ordered about 20 dishes to start, plus 2 kinds of tea (they have chrysanthemum tea which i love) and then 5 more dishes, and the total bill including tax was only $52. that is dirt cheap.

service was very friendly and helpful (they explained certain dishes to us and also brought us lots of water, which can be hard to get at dim sum). parking is easy. the place is basic but clean. i definitely recommend it.

Try Uncle Yips. It the best I have found in Cincinnati. If you are ever in Cleveland make it a point to go to Li Wah, you wont be disappointed. Thanks for the post.

I second Uncle Yips. Tasty. They are open on Sunday with cart service. I went there a few weeks back. Here's a recent Dim Sum write up in the local paper.

Pacific Moon, when it was in Montgomery, served great dim sum on weekends - carts and all. Every bit as good as New York. When they moved to Newport, the quality and atmosphere seemed to decline (but they still had the carts).

You can always find a good turnip cake recipe and buy one of these. No more $10 lunch though :-)

For the best dimsum in Cincinnati, try Bon's Chinese (formerly known as Jan's Chinese) on Montgomery Road across the street from Kroger's in Montgomery. Best dimsum and the most choices. Uncle Yips is OK, but food tends to be greasy. I like Chinese Imperial for the best Chinese seafood (try the razor or Manila clams) but Bon's has better dimsum. Good Luck.
