fish fry fridays... facing the fear

as long time readers know, i have a serious fear of organized religion which normally does not affect my day-to-day life, food-related or otherwise, very much. however during this season of amazingly delicious church fish fries, my fear gets in the way of my need to consume tasty food at a low cost.

last year, i faced my fear head on and went for some god and cod. while the fish was crazy good and i was proud of myself for facing my fear, i remain terrified of fish fries at churches. it is bad.

i am not one to shy away from a challenge so i have decided that this year, i will be eating at a fish fry every friday from now until the end of lent. i have no idea when that is but it can't be that far off from now since i feel like people have been avoiding meat for a while now. ok i just looked it up and it is april 3.

every friday from now until then (well except maybe this friday since i will be wasted off my ass at bockfest), i am here on this blog publicly committing to go to a fish fry.

here is my calendar so far:
  • march 12: st. francis de sales in east walnut hills for lauren's birthday
  • march 19: st. boniface in northside with the dojo gelato crowd
  • march 26: mary queen of heaven in erlanger
  • april 2: TBD
now i need your help. first, i need suggestions for the best fish fries. also, i need company because i am seriously too scared to do this on my own. friends and readers who are not stalkers, please comment here if you either a) know of good fish fries or b) will join me on my quest. i will update the calendar as i decide on locations.

Liz - I was telling Ryan how I also want to go to at least one Fish Fry in Cincinnati this year. There is a website where they list all of the fish fries going on this year. I'll try to find it, or maybe someone reading this comment will beat me to the punch and post it.

I am an uber lax Catholic, but still freakishly committed to eating fish on Fridays. I've already broken my Lenten challenge... so maybe going to a church fish fry can make up for that.

Would love to join you!!

Maggie - is this the website you were thinking?

Thanks Kate - That's not it, but it works. The one I'm talking about is put out by a catholic church or something.

BTW - everytime I see the McDonalds Filet of Fish commercial I think of you.

excellent ladies! i am up for any of them. i am particularly interested in places with excellent fish and/or other foods. last year's salted rye at st. john white oak was amazing.

Mary Queen of Heaven is supposed to be really good, but I'm not sure where it is. I did DeSales last year, and it was ok. Put me down for April 2!

Ooh, and I just realized that this is great timing, because you will finish your challenge just in time to confidently (and fearlessly) hit up the Sacred Heart Ravioli Dinner in April!

Two fish fries that I can recommend from personal experience (and I am not associated with either one) are Mary Queen of Heaven (on Donaldson Rd in Erlanger) and All Saints (east off I75 in Walton). All Saints serves beer, can't remember iof MQH does or not.

St. Vivian's in Finneytown is good. Nice variety on the menu and they serve beer. On Winton Rd. We go there every year!

I too have a fear of organized religion but am tempted to try a fish fry! I notice that St. Williams in Price Hill has a drive thru so at least that way I won't have to actually go in the church!

Hartzell United Methodist Church in Blue Ash is good. You get all-you-can-eat fried cod, bread, cole slaw, mac n cheese and homemade desserts. They also serve shrimp, chicken and cheese pizza.

One of the chefs who teaches at Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute, Alan Neace, also holds a fish fry at his kids’ school in Florence every Friday during Lent. It’s at St. Paul’s School, 7303 Dixie Highway. There's a website with the menu and specials. I hope all Catholic fish frys serve beer!

This vegetarian/pescetarian will join you in your quest (that is, if I can get out of work before 9pm on some Friday in the near future). Alas, I do not have a fish fry recommendation; I trust you'll find good ones, though!

I am a Fish Fry Veteran, and Hartzell United Methodist Church is one of the best! They bring 2nd's, 3rd's etc to your table. Might have to sit in the "church" for 10 minutes or so 'til they call your #.

Glad to see that Mary, Queen of Heaven is on your schedule for tonight. I'm totally biased, but I really do think we have the best fish. :) We also have a fun atmosphere - big-screen showing sports events, our pastor greeting folks and serving (free) cheese to guests waiting in line... we even have The Codfather and his Men of Sole. Seriously - it's a great time! For anyone not sure where it is or what is on the menu, visit www.mqhparish.com.
