the atmosphere at kona bistro is nice if you have never been there. good service, bright, flowers on the table. the brunch menu is limited. there were 3 items i believe: a scrambled eggs and pork medallions dish, chocolate chip pancakes, and something else i forgot.
emma and i both went for the eggs and pork combo. basically it was eggs scrambled w/ basil, 2 pieces of pork, and some home style potatoes, all topped in this kind of fruity (raspberry?) sauce. it was... interesting. not bad. not great. the pork was totally dry and tough. (aside: what is w/ people constantly overcooking pork? you are not going to get fucking worms just b/c it's juicier than a couch cushion.)
the eggs were overscrambled in my opinion. also, overall, the pork and eggs were both kind of bland. actually, the more i write about that damn pork and egg thingy, the less i realize i liked it. also, saying "pork and eggs" just sounds gross. but the raspberry sauce was good (and made things less dry) and so were the potatoes.
the coffee was very good. minor annoyance: they take your mug away to refill it. at one point, that left me w/out coffee for 15 min while they made a new pot. i could have been nursing that last bit in the bottom!
emily's brunch-o-meter^tm (nerdy):
Quality of food: 2.5 (and lowering by the minute thanks to pork and egg weirdness)
Quality of coffee: 4
Service: 3.5
Atmosphere: 4
Alcohol: N/A (we didn't have any although they do have great wine and martini selections)
Overall value: 3.5
i would say go here for brunch but order from the regular menu, like get a salad or sandwich or something. skip the brunch-specific items. i have had several other things on their menu that are much more delicious than that pork and egg crap (such as corn chowder, stir fry salad, veggie burger, etc).
note to self: do not order anything involving a combination of pork and eggs ever again.
note to reader(s?): the pork and eggs were not that bad, i am totally just working myself up at this point.
