anyway... i went to NYC over labor day to visit friends and coney island (since i am worried it won't be there soon) and eat and have some exciting adventures!
i started the weekend off right with iced coffee and H&H bagels
we soaked in the sights for possibly the last time at coney island
of course i had to have my nathan's
we had some seriously fresh and delicious sushi at yama. alex "nobu" hu prefers the union square location, which was sadly closed for the weekend. so we ate at the one on houston instead, which we found actually has bigger portions. mmmmmm....
we passed up the dim sum giants for tiny hop shing aka chatham, which was well worth it both in flavor and in ambience (and cost... grand total for 5 people was $33!!!). it came recommended by alex "pork bun" hu's grandma... and grandmas know food. only one downside: grossest. bathroom. ever.
we saw a pirate ship go by from battery park (no plundering occurred)
we drank our favorite mojitos in the city at boca chica (and we also ate there too... not pictured)
after wandering the lower east side and bar hopping for a while, we finally found mehanata (aka the bulgarian bar, aka my favorite bar in NY) which relocated a while back. we took fun pictures...
...and pole danced...
...and stuck bulgarian beer stickers on ourselves...
...and raised the roof...
...and grabbed each other's asses...
...and smoked a hookah...
...and i ended the night looking like this. all in all a successful evening!
we had to go to joe's shanghai (well we actually went to joe's ginger, the lesser known sister restaurant down the street) for the legendary soup dumplings i had been hearing about for years but never got around to trying and which now haunt me in both my waking and sleeping hours, mocking me with their now inaccessible deliciousness
nate demonstrates the proper technique: "To prevent burning one's mouth and to savor the dumpling, the preferred method of consumption is to bite off a little piece of the doughy wrapper, suck the broth with a "slurp", then eat the rest."
we also ate other awesome things there (alex "zagat" hu says: "joe's shanghai serves the same food but just has more complex flavors than other chinese restaurants")
we stopped by the chinatown ice cream factory for some cold, creamy deliciousness (i recommend the coconut ice cream)
captain alex "jack sparrow" hu took us sailing on his boat in the long island sound
and an excellent time was had by all!added bonus: other bordering on life alteringly delicious things i ate in NY which are not pictured:
- brunch (smoked salmon eggs benedict with asparagus) at garage
- pizza from big nick's
- ice cream at emack and bolio's
- frappes and bagels from brooklyn bagel
