trader joe's treasures

i went to trader joe's a couple days ago and of course ended up buying everything under the sun that looked good but which i actually have no real use for in my daily eating (ie- frozen panna cotta, 3 different flavors of beef jerky, some crazy new genetically altered tangerine variety, etc.).

today i was poking around in the fridge. i had a little leftover pasta and sauce from last night but not enough to fill me up. fortunately, my random collection of foods from trader joe's included a package of baby heirloom tomatoes, some salad greens, a chunk of italian parmesan, and some bresaola. i put it on a plate, added some lemon, olive oil, salt, and pepper, and dinner was served.

moo

now a random journey into the depths of my brain... you have been warned. one of my favorite food combinations is the heart attack inducing meat and dairy pair. bresaola and parmesan got me thinking about it, but there's also the cheeseburger, chicken tikka masala, lasagna, cincinnati style chili topped with grated cheddar, and of course, raw kibby with melted butter (which is possibly my favorite).

i'm not jewish, so i didn't really know anything about what kosher food was until i was probably a teenager. i remember when i learned that eating meat and dairy together is considered taboo under kosher dietary laws. i thought that actually it really makes sense. the idea of eating the milk of a live cow together with the meat of a dead cow is totally perverse. imagine if we came upon some cannibals (or better yet, some carnivorous cows), and not only were they eating human meat, but they were serving it with human milk. i think we would lose it. it's totally disgusting to think about.

eating the milk of an animal together with that animal's flesh is really gross, but on top of that it's disrespectful. hey animal, not only are we going to kill and eat you, we are going to mock you by making you even more delicious by eating your mother's milk right along with you.

however, none of this changes the fact that cheeseburgers are awesome. i feel kind of guilty about all of this beef and milk eating, but not guilty enough to stop. clearly i am going to hell, but at least i will be well fed. wait, do jews believe in hell?

I don't know about the meat and milk of a cow in the same meal but in India we drank goat's milk and ate their meat. Not in one seating, for more reasons than one. 1. Goat curry is made with spices like cumin, coriander, and garam masala. Milk with goat curry would be a bad combination. 2. Agreeing with your point, it's pretty weird to drink an animal's milk while eating their flesh. (Want to know how much I like you goat?)

I always buy weird food at Trader Joe's. Now I've settled into a routine--we buy our milk, rice, yogurt, and peanut butter there--but I still buy weird things when I go. One time I came home with a package of strange goat cheese (it had a picture on it that was clearly a sheep), trail mix that had only fruits I'd never heard of (goji berry before it became ubiquitous), and crackers made out of seaweed, brown rice, and--I quote the package--"flakes."
