anyway, i work downtown and i eat out a lot. actually, not as much lately because i am trying to save money. but i have eaten at pretty much every lunch place downtown at some point and i never write about them. so i'm going to try to start doing that more often.
today i was really excited because rickell and i decided to hit up flo's plate full of soul (133 E. Court St., 513-421-3567). this is a new place on court st. where poppa joe's used to be. actually you might not know poppa joe's since it was only there for a few months. it was a crappy fried chicken place that reused their frying oil too much.
flo's is yummy. i had the baked leg quarters, greens, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. my favorite was the macaroni... it was really flavorful and cheesy. the greens i thought were undercooked and needed vinegar. cornbread and chicken were ok but not outstanding. rickell had the chicken wings and yam fries, both of which were really good.
other options on the menu include a few different kinds of fried fish, breakfast sandwiches, and a cobbler of the day. on wednesdays they also offer meatloaf and pork chops. flo's is open weekdays from 7 am to 3 pm. fyi: the owners of flo's used to work at aunt flora's in findlay market, which is now closed.
unfortunately flo's does not have seating so you have to get it to go. i have a feeling this might be more of a problem in the winter when it is cold and snowy out (the line was out the door already in their first week open). upper downtown does not have a whole lot of good places to just sit outside and eat either. maybe flo's will put a few tables outside like kitty's and servatii's down the street.
overall, the food is good (with some room for improvement). hopefully flo's will be around for a while. if the crowds hold up, i am sure they will be. it's very exciting to have flo's around since there really is no other soul food within lunchtime walking distance for me. and i get damn sick of sandwiches and salads.

Do they have weekend hours? I had heard that they wouldn't-- just open during the week. As if no one ever goes downtown or, perhaps, lives there and has no chance to get there during the week for what Terry calls the best catfish outside of Alabama.

unfortunately flo's is not not open on weekends. i totally agree with you though... everyone is always like "downtown is dead on the weekends" and guess what? it's because there is shit to do there on weekends. i used to live in over the rhine and it drove me nuts. also annoying: the number of restaurants all over the city that are closed on sundays.
It always disappoints me Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays!
Had a chance to visit The Caspian Express yet? I am curious how their food is. I noticed for a while they had their outside food booth, but that seems to have gone away.
I love me some good southern home cooking. I might have to "work from home" one day and try it. Working from home means I do about an hour of work and play the rest of the day. I think of it has a mental health day.

Flo's IS open on Sunday... so go there instead of Chick-Fil-A. They open at 1:00.
FYI: Flo's Plate Full Of Soul has new hours Monday - Friday 8a.m. - 5-p.m. with limited seating during the week. Mondays special is homemade burger and fries, Tuesdays special is baked leg quarters, Wednesdays special is pork chops, Thursdays special is meatloaf, Fridays special is salmon croquettes. Flo's offers a family meal daily. Flo's will accommodate groups of 15 that would like to come in and dine after hours. Flo's also offers soul food catering by the pan and of course Aunt Flora's Cobbler Pie! These cobblers come in a variety of sizes. You can call your orders in ahead by calling 421-FLOS (3567).
